China revealed details of the Hurricane 3000, a high-power microwave system designed to counter drones and swarms at distances exceeding 3 km.
Developed by state-owned Norinco, the equipment was showcased at the September military parade and stands out for surpassing the range of the American Leonidas system, currently limited to about 2 km.
Mounted on a truck, the Hurricane 3000 extends the concept of point defense to area denial, capable of operating independently or integrated with lasers and conventional artillery. According to Norinco, the system uses radar and electro-optical sensors to detect and track targets, instantly neutralizing drones with microwaves capable of disabling their electronics on a large scale.
With low cost per shot, wide area coverage, and effectiveness against saturation attacks, the system integrates into a layered air defense that includes missiles and laser weapons. The Chinese company also claims the technology can be expanded for missions such as disrupting enemy communications, countering aerial electronic reconnaissance, and neutralizing precision-guided munitions.
